Paper Usage

A number of steps have been taken in order to reduce the amount of paper used at the institution. These include:

  • The use of the Learning Management System (LMS) Moodle has reduced paper usage in the classroom as course content is now provided to students electronically.
  • A new electronic Learning Management System (LMS) has been installed at the new Nelson Mandela University's Business School.  This is a customised version of the Moodle Learning Management System. This new initiative, called Incoko (“conversation” in isiXhosa), will be used to provide a paperless content delivery system as well as a supervision request form.
  • ICT Blended Learning unit is investigating assessment technologies towards a suggested solution for e-assessment/online assessment.  The investigation is focused on utilizing available technologies and the University's infrastructure to create a secure environment for assessment.
  • A Research on-line Funds application system for staff has been developed and is currently being tested. This system will enable the research office to better manage the funds allocated for various research projects as well as give the HRC a potentially paperless system to evaluate the progress of research being conducted.
