The next few days and weeks will be critical for Nelson Mandela University in navigating the initial challenges of Day Zero when the taps run dry before the institution is able to introduce alternative water supplies to its affected campuses.

In practical terms, the Phase 1 Emergency Plan will mean:

  • Fetching water for drinking, washing and cooking
  • Rationing water
  • Bringing your own drinking water to avoid the inconvenience of walking to fetch fresh water
  • Using buckets to fetch non-potable water for flushing toilets

Phase 1: Emergency support

To help manage these challenges:

  • Various toilets and other buildings across the affected campuses will be temporarily closed
  • Fresh water will be transported onto campus. This water will be dispensed from water trucks into specifically marked drinking water tanks.
  • Tanks containing non-potable water (not suitable for drinking) will be marked to enable flushing of toilets and general cleaning
  • Portable toilets will be set up at examination venues

Maps guiding staff, students and visitors to the toilets and different water tanks will also soon be shared.
