Nelson Mandela University wishes to bring your attention to the severity of the water crisis by sharing the latest appeal from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality.

NMB has started extracting less water from all our dams in a bid to delay the depletion of dams by July 2023.

Over the last couple of weeks we were extracting more than a 100 Ml a day from our respective dams. We will now reduce that extraction by at least 30 Ml for the immediate future although further cuts may follow.

If demand does not reduce immediately, residents and businesses in the Red Zone will start experiencing intermitted water outages.

Areas in the Red Zone includes but is not limited to:

*Mount Pleasant

*Lovemore Heights

*Kariega/Uitenhage CBD

*Newton Park

*Kwazakhele

*Fairview

*North End

*Central

*Deal Party

*New Brighton

*Parsons Hill

*Greenshields Park

*Walmer

*Summerstrand

*Mill Park

*Humewood

*Schoenmakerskop

*Greenbushes

*St Albans

We will send out a comprehensive list of suburbs that are affected but if you live adjacent to these suburbs you are very likely included in the red zone.

Please note we expect EVERYONE in NMB to reduce consumption and adhere to the 50 L per person per day rule. All businesses have been instructed to reduce consumption by at least 20% or more. If consumers outside the red zone don’t reduce demand sufficiently we will start throttling demand to those areas as we require savings to augment water to the red zone.

The next couple of months are absolutely critical for us to get through. We can prevent the taps from running dry but only if we work together!

Please note that it is unlawful for you to fill storage tanks with municipal water and you can be fined R5000 for that practise.
