The University’s North, South, Ocean Sciences and Second Avenue campuses, like large parts of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, have struggled with no water or very low water pressure today due to the ongoing drought.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) reported that these intermittent water outages are likely to continue over the next few days unless we do not cut back on water consumption.

The Metro is endeavouring to rebuild water capacity at both the Airport and Driftsands reservoirs but consumption above the 50 litres per person means is it unable to do so.

“We have no choice. Either reduce demand and have access to some water or, in the alternative, face continued water outages lasting days, or indefinitely,” implored Executive Mayor Retief Odendaal in a daily update to Metro residents.

As the University prepares to “switch over” to alternative water sources and action temporary water support interventions, staff and students are requested to prepare for these eventualities, such as bringing your own bottled or boiled water to campus.
